Northwest District Venturing

There are currently 13 Venturing Crews in the Northwest District.   Venturing is a great program to keep older Scouts involved, to allow for co-ed units and also works very well with an established program for youth groups such as those in churches.  The Northwest District Venturing Commissioner is Wes Elder.

More information about Venturing may also be found on the National BSA site.  The following is a link to the National site: Venturing.

Venturing Advisor Fast Start

This is a quick orientation class for new Venturing Leaders.  This is a video tape and packet format and can be completed in less than an hour.  It provides information on the structure and operation of a Troop and a brief orientation for all new Boy Scout leaders.

Each Crew should have a Venturing Fast Start video and Fast Start packets.  Contact the Crew Training Chair or Crew Committee Chair about this.  The following are Fast Start contact options:

- Run Venturing Advisor Fast Start online.  If you take this class online please make sure that you print 2 copies of your training certificate after you complete the class.  To do this, re-enter the olc.scouting, org site and return to where you started the class.  It should now show a link "View Certificate".  Click on this link to view and print it.  Turn one copy in to the District Training Chair (this can be done at Roundtable of at the Council Office) so that you are assured that it is added to your training records.

- Check one out at Northern Star Council

- Ask Northern Star Council for unit copies (Crew provides blank tapes)

- Request a copy at the next Northwest District Roundtable

- Contact the District Training Chair

Venturing Training

Some new leaders ask why there is Venturing Training.  One of the strengths of the Scouting program is that it works very hard to provide the skills and knowledge leaders will need to fill that position.  It also allows you to create a network that you can contact for ideas.  Many times new Venturing leaders have previously been leaders in some other area of Scouting.  Venturing Specific Training is focused on the things that are unique to venturing such as co-ed groups, dealing with youth who may be as old as 20, both of the advancement paths in Venturing and other Venturing unique things such as community resources for Venturing requirements.  The Northwest District Training Chair is Brian Steele.

Northwest District Training Records

Districts and units are measured on training as a criteria for quality awards.  Northwest District provides many opportunities each year for their registered leaders to have the training they need for their position.  One question that often arises is what training have the leaders of any given unit taken.  The Northwest District Committee would like every unit in the district to have access to this information.  This can be used by volunteers to see what training they have and what they need.  It can be used by the Unit Leader, the Committee Chair and/or the Unit Training Coordinator to help determine who needs training as the classes become available.  It can also be used to complete the Centennial Quality Unit Award forms.  We must also keep privacy considerations in mind while doing this.  The list provided contains only the initials of leaders and is sorted by unit.  Note that this report is an extract that will be updated periodically.  The date of the report is on each page of the report.  Note that this report only shows the key training elements and does not contain every training available to leaders.  Records are kept of training that does not show on this report.  Individuals may contact the Training Registrar for their complete individual profile.  The Unit Leader and/or Unit Committee Chair may also request a report from the Training Registrar with the complete profiles for the leaders in their unit.  Click here for the most recent (12/8/07) Northwest District Venturing Scout Leader Training Records.(24KB)

New Leader Essentials

It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting and Venturing. The Troop Committee Challenge (TCC) is effective for the entire Troop Committee and the Scoutmaster. Youth Protection (YP) is vital.
